Musical May: Recitals, Reflection and Review

May is an amazing month for making music! Recital pieces are in great shape, the weather is lovely, and the school year is winding down. Take advantage of the celebratory mood and blue skies – if your instrument is portable (be it a guitar or small keyboard), take lessons outside! Teachers at our flagship Philadelphia school have had great fun writing theory out in sidewalk chalk, marching out Rhythm Village patterns, and improvising in the green grass.

Around here, May also means recital prep. As you prepare for your own performances, encourage students to hold “mock” recitals for parents, siblings and friends – complete with intros and applause. (Pro tip: Also practice having things go wrong! Have the kid pretend to freeze and go blank. What section should they go to? What's the emergency plan?)

Another great May activity is to polish and review repertoire pieces from the past school year. Students will get to celebrate what they've learned, take a walk down memory lane AND go into the summer months with lots of amazing tunes to play for family and friends.
